3 Easy Steps to Washing Machine Joy!

News at Palace Gate Lettings | 31/03/2021

Okay, “joy” may be quite an overstatement and this it may not be at the top of your “to-do” list, but even if you don’t have any problems with your machine at the moment, the following steps will help ensure your washing machine – and your clothes – stay fresh.

Keep your soap drawer clean

This can get clogged up with soap and mildew over time, so will need checking regularly.  In order to do this take the drawer out, soak for a little while, then clean with warm, soapy water.

Clean the filter

The filter catches any bits that are left in pockets, such as coins, hairclips and fluff.  It’s the most common cause of a washing machine to stop working mid cycle, usually not draining. These simple steps should help you check the filter;

  • Ensure sure the machine is switched off, place a shallow tray under the filter open the filter flap
  • Twist the handle / unclip to take the filter out.
  • Pull out anything that may be causing a blockage.
  • Clean the filter and pop back in.

If in doubt, check your user manual or there are plenty of handy videos on You Tube!

Keep the inside of the machine clean

Washing clothes at lower temperatures is great for the environment but 30 degrees is the perfect temperature for bacteria and mould to develop inside the machine and in the door seal.

It is recommended that you run a 90 degree wash cycle with no clothes in it and use a washing machine cleaner.  These products are usually found in the laundry aisle.  Doing this once very month should help kill any lingering bacteria and mould.

Finally, leave the machine drum door and soap drawer slightly open after every wash to allow airflow and help prevent musty smells transferring to your clothes.

Hopefully these suggestions will help, however, if you think there is a mechanical fault with the appliance then it may need to be looked at by a professional.  If you property is managed by Palace Gate Lettings then please get in touch with us, if not then please contact whoever looks after property maintenance for where you live.
